Our Words Matter

“But I tell you that for every careless word that people speak, they will give an account of it on the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”” Matthew 12:36-37 NASB2020https://bible.com/bible/2692/mat.12.37.NASB2020

Words are powerful. We say sticks and stones break our bones and words cannot harm us but that is a lie. Most of the pain in our lives comes from the words people have spoken to us, about us and against us, especially by those we assumed loved us. So it is with God. Do we love Him? What words do we speak about Him? Particularly before others. Are we silent about our true love? Imagine that with your spouse? If we are ashamed of Jesus in this world He will be ashamed of us when we stand before Him to enter the next world with Him. Our words indicate our loyalty. With our mouth we confess that Jesus is our Lord because we believe in Him with our hearts resulting in our salvation, the eternal pardon of God in order to live eternally with God. God calls us His witnesses, we are to speak of Him before people so that their hearing His word can result in their having faith in their hearts to believe and walk in obedience to all of Jesus’ commands even as we ourselves do the same. Talking gossip and slander about politicians, athletes, or our employer is wasted words, useless words, liable words against us at the judgement seat of Christ. Words that glorify God, that lead others to understand and believe and obey God in Jesus will be honored by God before us at the judgement to come resulting in our reception of God’s joy and great reward. In these days many are afraid to speak words that go against the culture’s opinions but the Christian speaks God’s words for God’s glory and man’s benefit leaving the results of those words to God and the responsibility of response to those who hear.
